Dr Michael Catanach is an Australian-trained orthopaedic surgeon who focuses on conditions of the hand, wrist and elbow. He consults from Gateshead, opposite Lake Macquarie Private Hospital, and sees patients from across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter.
Dr. Michael Catanach is a fully qualified and Australian trained Orthopaedic Surgeon. After completing his medical degree at Sydney University in 2011, he moved to Newcastle and completed his specialist Orthopaedic training with John Hunter Hospital, the busiest major trauma centre in New South Wales.
Dr Catanach’s passion has always been hand surgery. As such, following his training, he has set up practice in Newcastle, where he is now happy to call home. His office is located in the specialist centre across from Lake Macquarie Private Hospital and he operates at both Lake Macquarie and Ramsay Surgical Centre Charlestown.
Michael is regularly involved in teaching medical students and junior doctors anatomy and surgical techniques.
Most of Dr Catanach’s patients come to him with numbness, pain, stiffness, a lump or an injury. Whether it’s carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, thumb arthritis or complex hand and wrist injuries, both non-surgical and surgical options are always considered.

Yes. To claim a Medicare rebate, you’ll need a referral from your GP or another doctor. You can ask your GP to address the referral to Dr Michael Catanach by name. Once we receive it, along with any X-rays or scans, our reception team will contact you to book an appointment. Contact us if you have questions about your referral.
New patients are usually seen within a week of us receiving a referral. If you have a recent fracture or injury, please mention it when you call. Reception is open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, on (02) 4099 2444.

Yes. Dr Catanach sees patients from across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, including Charlestown, Belmont, Warners Bay and Swansea, as well as Maitland, Port Stephens and the wider Hunter.
Please bring your referral, any scans and a list of your medications. Dr Catanach will talk with you about your symptoms, examine your hand or wrist, and review your imaging. He’ll then explain your options, both non-surgical and surgical, so you can decide on a plan together. A Medicare rebate applies to consultations with a valid referral. Dr Catanach also sees DVA, WorkCover and CTP patients. Our reception team can explain fees when you book and provide details of orthopaedic surgery if required.
