Dr Michael Catanach is an Australian-trained Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in hand and upper limb surgery. He graduated from the University of Sydney in 2011 before completing his specialist orthopaedic training at John Hunter Hospital, the busiest major trauma centre in New South Wales.
Following his training, Dr Catanach established his practice in Newcastle, where he is proud to live and work. He consults from the specialist centre opposite Lake Macquarie Private Hospital and operates at both Lake Macquarie Private Hospital and Ramsay Surgical Centre Charlestown.
Dr Catanach is committed to providing exceptional, patient-centred care. He believes every patient deserves the time to be heard, a thorough assessment, and a clear understanding of their diagnosis and treatment options. By combining the latest evidence with a personalised approach, he works closely with each patient to develop a treatment plan tailored to their individual needs. Where appropriate, both non-surgical and surgical options are explored to achieve the best possible outcome.
Understanding your condition is the first step towards effective treatment. During your consultation, Dr Michael Catanach takes the time to listen to your concerns, thoroughly assess your condition, and explain your diagnosis in clear, straightforward language. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and leave with a clear understanding of what’s causing your symptoms.
Every patient is different, which is why treatment should never be one-size-fits-all. Dr Catanach will discuss all appropriate treatment options with you, including both non-surgical and surgical approaches where suitable. Using the latest evidence and his specialist expertise, he will explain the benefits, risks and expected outcomes of each option so you can make an informed choice.
The best treatment plan is one that’s right for you. Dr Catanach believes in shared decision-making, where your goals, lifestyle and preferences are central to every recommendation. Together, you’ll develop a personalised treatment plan that gives you confidence in the path forward and supports the best possible outcome.
You will be referred by your GP or, in the case of a more urgent injury, a doctor in the emergency department.
The referral letter and any important scans will be automatically received by Dr Catanach.
Dr Catanach will spend time getting to know you and your problem. Questions will be asked and the hand examined closely to find out what the problem is.
Sometimes diagnosis is easy, other times more scans may be required.
Once a clear diagnosis has been made, treatment methods will be discussed including non-surgical and surgical options. A shared decision making process will help you and Dr Catanach arrive at an agreeable plan to move forward.
